The Australian flooding continues.  Called the worst floods since 1974, a national disaster has unfolded and is continuing to unfold across Australia.

Lives have been lost.  Animals are stranded and/or homeless.  Homes and belongings destroyed.  This is truly a horrible tragedy.  Currently, more than 22,000 volunteers are set to march into action and continue Queensland’s mammoth flood clean-up efforts.  So far 86 communities in the state have been affected by flooding, with parts of Brisbane submerged on Wednesday.

As our hearts go out to the people and animals of Australia, we would like to bring to your attention ways you can donate to help out the relief effort.

At the beginning of the 2010 season, you may remember that the NOAA predicted that there would be 8-14 hurricanes and 14-23 tropical storms this season! Well, they were right on the money!

To date, there have been 10 hurricanes and 7 tropical storms named in the Atlantic alone. The Pacific has seen four tropical storms and 3 hurricanes. The most recent hurricane, Hurricane Richard, blasted Belize just a few days ago. The next name awaiting a storm in the 2010 roster would be Shary. Currently, there are three patches of disturbance in the Atlantic; however, meteorologists predict little threat from them.

An interesting fact: The last time there was a hurricane in the Atlantic during October was in 2008 when Hurricane Omar swept through the Caribbean between the dates of October 13-18.

With all the buzz of the finally active Atlantic hurricane season, you might have heard the term “Invest” being used.

Here is the definition as defined by the National Hurricane Center:

Invest:

A weather system for which a tropical cyclone forecast center (NHC, CPHC, or JTWC) is interested in collecting specialized data sets (e.g., microwave imagery) and/or running model guidance. Once a system has been designated as an invest, data collection and processing is initiated on a number of government and academic web sites, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS). The designation of a system as an invest does not correspond to any particular likelihood of development of the system into a tropical cyclone; operational products such as the Tropical Weather Outlook or the JTWC/TCFA should be consulted for this purpose.

Projected Path of Tropical Storm 4

Eyes are on watch as we wait to see what happens. Tropical Depression 4 could become Tropical Storm Colin by this evening (Monday, August 2). At least the projected path doesn’t include any landfall as of now. Let’s hope it stays on the Atlantic and we all just get residual rains.

At a recent shopping trip to my local Tampa Bay Publix, I was surprised and happy to see a sign advocating that I visit www.publix.com/storm.   I am pleased to announce that this is yet another great site with excellent information for residents of Florida and other areas that might be targets for hurricane activity.

The Publix site includes a link to developing an emergency plan with their partner, OneStorm, as well as downloadable checklists for emergency supplies and non-perishable foods.  In addition, there is a free downloadable guide that Publix is also giving away at their stores.  If you cannot find one at your local Publix, make sure to ask a Customer Service agent for help!

I applaud Publix for taking this step and spending their marketing money on a worthy cause.  Hurricane Safety is extremely important and it is great to see Publix taking a lead here.  Thanks Publix!
