PostHeaderIcon Mold Proofing Your Home: Bathroom Black Mold Prevention

The bathroom is usually where most people first start to see signs of mold.  Lucky for you, we are here to help you prevent mold before it starts to grow! As part of our Mold-Proofing Your Home, Room by Room series, we are pleased to offer you mold-proofing advice on bathrooms!

Mold Proof your Bathroom:

  • Check the bathroom fan to make sure it exhausts to the outside.
  • Turn the bathroom fan on when you shower. Keep it running for a few minutes after you finish your shower.
  • Take short showers.
  • Keep surfaces that get wet, such as the walls around the bathtub and shower, clean and dry.
  • If there is a carpet in your bathroom, remove it.
  • Check for water leaks.
  • Keep drains in good shape by removing debris from them.

As an added tip, mop your floors once a week with white vinegar and also spray your tile and tub with white vinegar.  White vinegar had been proven to kill 82% of known mold species.  Learn more natural methods to kill mold.

Remember, when it comes to mold growth prevention, controlling moisture is key.

PostHeaderIcon Top Ten Facts About Mold

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, New York City Health Department, here are ten top things to know about mold!

1. There are more than 100,000 species of mold. Most types that are routinely found are not hazardous to healthy individuals. But too much exposure or certain types of mold could cause allergic reactions, asthma, rashes, respiratory complaints or other types of mold related illness.

2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores indoors. The way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

3. If mold is a problem at home or in school, clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.

4. Fix the water leak to prevent mold growth.

5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30%-60% ) to decrease mold growth.

6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials like ceiling tiles, plasterboard or wood, may need to be replaced.

8. Prevent condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, pipes, exterior walls, roof or floors) by adding insulation.

9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting.

10. Molds can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet and foods.

PostHeaderIcon Fog in Palm Harbor, Ozona & Tarpon Springs

Fog is every tonight! Driving back from a mold remediation job in Clearwater on our way to New Port Richey, we can’t help but notice the blanket of fog over Northern Pinellas County. Fog is interesting. It is fascinating and beautiful and tends to play by its own rules. Fog generally forms when the humidity in the air reaches near 100%. Though, this does not apply all the time. In the UK, if the humidity is over 95%, the fog is referred to as a mist. If under 95%, it is referred to as a haze. The current humidity level in Palm Harbor is 93% and it is quite foggy outside!

A higher humidity outside means that the inside of your property is at higher risk for water damage and mold growth. Signs of increased humidity include condensation on windows and sliding glass doors. If you notice this, dry off the moisture and keep at it while the condensation lasts.

The best thing you can do is have your property checked and get a prevention plan in place. Whether for prevention or in the case of an emergency, Advanced Restoration, Inc. is here for you 24 hours a day. Click here for more info or call 1-800-DRY-ME-OUT.
