Before one can fight mold, though, one must learn about what mold is.
Molds are microscopic fungi, a group of organisms which also includes mushrooms and yeasts. Fungi are highly adapted to grow and reproduce rapidly, producing spores and mycelia in the process.
Mold is encountered every day. Foods spoil because of mold. Leaves decay and pieces of wood lying on the ground rot due to mold. That fuzzy black growth on wet window sills is mold. Paper or fabrics stored in a damp place get a musty smell that is due to the action of molds.
While molds are often considered to be harmful, certain molds can be useful to people. The drug penicillin is obtained from a specific type of mold. Some foods and beverages are made by the actions of molds. The key to beneficial kinds of molds is that they are selected and grown in a controlled fashion.
Molds are undesirable when they grow where we don’t want them, such as in homes. Molds that grow inside may be different from the ones found outdoors. According to USA Today, there are at least 100,000 types of mold, but only a few dozen are toxic and can cause health problems. These toxic molds produce chemicals called mycotoxins that can cause rashes, seizures, unusual bleeding, headaches, respiratory problems and severe fatigue in some people. According to the Mayo Clinic, sinus problems are almost always the result of toxic mold.

Is All Mold Toxic?
Black mold often connotes the “Black Plague.” If you find something you think is black mold, don’t panic, as not all discoloration is mold and not all black molds are toxic. In fact, humans and pets often cause some of the spots that look like black mold. Unknown Water Damage: A Renter’s Nightmare
For renters, there are a number of considerations that go into renting a property. A usual rental checklist will include searching for a specific number of bedrooms and bathrooms, a garage, location and possibly the types of appliances a property is rented with. Unfortunately, asking about previous water damage is usually not on the list. And even if it is, it is unlikely that the information will be disclosed.
A simple visual inspection of a property is usually not enough to locate hidden sources of water damage. Often, properties are painted prior to being shown; hence, visual evidence of mold or water damage will be concealed. Also, it might be the case that water damage occurred years ago and is hibernating until spring; “spring” being the day you take possession and move into your brand new water-damaged rental.
A recent example of renting a property with unknown water damage involves a non-profit group from Texas who recently rented an older home to use as a historic museum. The group had allocated $5000 towards renovating the historic property to house the museum. Unfortunately, upon renovating the property, toxic black mold was discovered within the walls.

Forecasters predict active hurricane season

Meteorologists are predicting an active 2010 hurricane season with above-normal threats on the U.S. coastline.
Hurricane Forecaster Joe Bastardi, with the AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center, said Wednesday that he predicts seven landfalls. Five will be hurricanes and two or three of the hurricanes will be major landfalls for the U.S.
Bastardi forecasts 16 to 18 tropical storms in total, 15 of which will likely be in the western Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico.
In a typical season, there are about 11 named storms, with only two or three impacting the coast of the United States.
The rapidly weakening El Nino, warmer ocean temperatures, weakening trade winds and higher humidity levels will all contribute to greater storm activity.

Water Damage Tampa Bay Restoration that is not a Horror Story
If you read the following client testimonial on water damage restoration, you will notice an interesting statement:
“Great company. They answered the phone immediately and were at my house in less than 45 minutes. Dressed professional and they knew their stuff. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about other restoration companies. Not this one….they are THE BEST. Offered to clean my carpets for FREE after the job was completed throughout my whole house. Not just the area affected. Thanks John and Josh.”
If you picked out “I’ve heard a lot of horror stories”, then you picked the right one. This statement is a bit shocking to us because we take what we do so seriously, but, we guess, as with any occupation, there are always the bad seeds. After some asking around, we talked to someone who had a visit from, we’ll just call them the Tampa Water Cleanup company. Anyways, they showed up hours later than they were supposed to and were down right unprofessional. The job was sloppy and the house was left in a mess.
Another story we were told of involves a woman who had called a plumber to come repair some sewer damage at her home. Apparently, he asked her out on a date while he was holding pieces of sewage that were obstructing the sewer line. Now, asking a client on a date is a number one no no in the world of professional services. Let alone asking someone out in that manner!

Water Damage Palm Harbor – FYI
Recently, we were asked by a client in Palm Harbor exactly how a pin hole leak might contribute to water damage.
The answer is quite significant so we wanted to share the information with everyone. Statistics prove that 250 gallons of water can be released per day by a mere 1/8-inch pipe crack (aka pin hole leak).
