What’s all this talk about La Nina?
You may have heard people uttering the phrase, “Oh, it’s La Niña…” in relation to the anticipated hurricane season ahead of us. So, the gang at Advanced Restoration decided to do some research and get to the bottom of this utterance.
According to sources, La Niña, which is part of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), might have something to do with a possibly busy hurricane season. ENSO consists of two extreme climate pattern stages: El Niño and La Nina. The ENSO system oscillates between stages every 3 to 4 years. Though El Niño will be consistently be present, it may not always be followed by a La Nina stage, rather, a normal neutral stage. What happens to create an extreme change relies on the interplay between changes in the ocean surface temperature and atmospheric conditions in the Tropical Pacific. During El Niño, water surface temperatures are significantly warmer while during a La Niña phase, Pacific surface water temperatures are cooler and winds are strengthened.
So how does La Niña affect the possibilities of hurricane activity in the Atlantic? According to the foremost expert on the subject, Dr. William Gray from Colorado State University, “the chances for the continental U.S. and the Caribbean Islands to experience hurricane activity increases substantially during La Niña.” While there are several factors that favor hurricane development, uniform atmospheric winds are one of the ingredients. Although La Niña produces wind departures at upper levels of the atmosphere in the Pacific, once in the West, the wind departures are at low levels. Thus, there tends to be more hurricane activity in the Atlantic during La Niña due to low wind shear. In contrast, El Niño produces the reverse effect and tends to create more hurricane activity in the Pacific.
“El Niño and La Niña also influence where the Atlantic hurricanes form. During El Niño fewer hurricanes and major hurricanes develop in the deep Tropics from African easterly waves. During La Niña more hurricanes form in the deep Tropics from African easterly waves. These systems have a much greater likelihood of becoming major hurricanes, and of eventually threatening the U.S. and Caribbean Islands.”
An interesting side note: Winters tend to be warmer in the Southern US during a La Niño year and cooler and possible extreme in the North (vice versa during an El Niño phase). La Nina and El Niño typically last about a year, though both can last up to two years during a phase.

Busy Hurricane Season? Let us not forget the past.
Nearing in on the end of July, we are closely watching a disturbance in the Caribbean, just of Puerto Rico & The Virgin Islands. According to the National Hurricane Center, there is a 60% chance of the system developing into a Tropical Depression. The heavy rains are expected to affect The Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Eastern Cuba, Turks & Caicos Islands and the Southeastern Bahamas. We are watching closely to see if the conditions, which are favorable enough to cause a Tropical Depression to form, might be equally favorable for a hurricane to form.
Experts are continuing to expect a busy hurricane season. “Conditions are favorable” are a term you might hear often. Why are conditions so favorable for hurricane development? First, ocean waters are warm. Hurricanes need waters to be at 79 degrees or above; coastal temperatures are consistently above that right now at temperatures of 84 and above just in the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures in the Caribbean and Tropical Atlantic are also in the 80′s and many are above-average. As well, experts are expecting low winds in the upcoming months, creating atmospheric conditions extremely favorable for hurricane development.
As for the limited storms so far, let us remember that the 3 strongest hurricane’s to hit the USA during the 20th Century did not occur until mid season.
The first of the 3 was the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The second tropical cyclone of the season, it quickly became the second hurricane and the 20th century’s first most powerful Category 5 hurricane. It formed on August 29 and dissipated on September 10, 1935. Marked as the most destructive Atlantic hurricane of the 20th Century, The Labor Day Hurricane killed between 400-600 people and caused extreme damage to the upper Florida Keys. Damages from the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 were tallied at over $95 Billion (2010 USD).
The second most powerful hurricane of the 20th century was Hurricane Camille in 1969. Forming on August 14, 1969 and dissipating on August 22, Camille devastated a great part of the Southwest. Although less costly than both the Labor Day Hurricane and Andrew, Camille was responsible for the deaths of 259 people.
Finally, Hurricane Andrew. Even in a seemingly inactive season during 1992, Hurricane Andrew, the third most powerful Category 5, formed August 16, 1992, and dissipated August 28. Andrew caused most damage to SW Florida, at a grand total of $26.5 billion in damage ($41.1 billion 2010 USD)!!! Some sources even speculate the damage was closer to $34 billion.
Even when we look back to 2005, the 21st Century’s busiest hurricane season to date, Hurricane Katrina, which was one of the most deadliest and also the costliest hurricanes, occurred in August.
Let us beware and remember the past as we are prepared for the future. To your hurricane safety!

Kentucky Flood Damage and Disaster
The poor victims of this weekend’s extraordinary flooding in Kentucky are in our thoughts today. After 2 confirmed and possibly 3 more fatalities and over two hundred destroyed homes, the residents of Pike County, Kentucky, are in desperate need of help and support.
Rescue crews have been working around the clock to save people stranded by the weekend storms. Governor Beshear has declared a State of Emergency. Approximately 400 residents remain without power in Pike County, down from more than 7,000 Sunday. Approximately 13,500 residents are without water, and another 13,000 are under a boil water advisory.

Rebuilding in Nashville Employs Builders
Good to hear that Nashville is building after the horrendous flooding. Happily, out of all the loss, there is somewhat of a silver lining – rebuilding means people are getting some work. Read the article below for full details.

Hurricane Proofing your Windows to Prevent Water Damage
2010 is predicted to be a contender when it comes to hurricanes; the NOAA has forecasted a busy hurricane season and so far, their forecast is right on with June’s Hurricane Alex being the earliest Atlantic hurricane since 1966.
In 2009, Advanced Restoration had a call for Water Damage Clearwater in where the homeowner’s windows were the culprits to allowing heavy rainwater to cause some serious water damage in the home. If only there had been a way to avoid the damage…

Clean Air Dust Reducing Carpet?
Recently, a company out of the Netherlands called Desso released a new type of carpeting called the “AirMaster”. Desso says that the AirMaster is designed to trap a higher amount of dust than regular carpets and thus, will reduce airborne particles. Essentially, the AirMaster carpet is said to clean the air.
Ok. So the air is cleaner, but what about the carpet that you walk on? According to independent tests by the German Test Institute, the AirMaster carpet releases 80% of its trapped dust during vacuuming. This result scores higher than regular carpeting which releases 16% less dust when vacuumed.
According to Desso, the AirMaster offers significant indoor air quality improvement and reduces the risk of dust-related health problems such as Asthma.
There is a great debate as to whether or not allergy sufferers & Asthmatics should have carpet in their house. In our opinion, it is really a matter of keeping the carpet clean. Although carpets can act as a filter and essentially trap airborne particles and dust, vacuuming 80% of the particles in your carpet just isn’t good enough. Carpets must be kept clean, vacuumed regularly and professionally cleaned at least every 6 months to optimally impact indoor air quality. If well maintained, they can actual impact indoor air quality better than hard flooring as the trapped particles are less likely to be disturbed.
Professional carpet cleaning is necessary because professional carpet cleaners have the tools to ensure that your carpet will be residue free upon completion. Even though homeowners can clean a carpet themselves, home cleaning presents risks of leaving residue and excess water (water that does not dry after 24 hours becomes a risk for mold growth). Some professionals even use new green techniques that involve little water and low environmental impact.
A final word would be that to maintain good indoor air quality, homeowners must also consider utilizing particle minimizing filters as well as maintaining an environment of low humidity. Indoor spaces that have high humidity will lead to mold growth which will not only impact the air quality in a negative way but will lead to mold-related health problems for you and your pets as well.

Keeping Your Dogs, Cats, Birds and Pets Safe this Hurricane Season
Amazingly enough, in doing our research for our latest article, we were shocked that both FEMA and the ASPCA warn pet owners NOT to leave their pets at home should they have to evacuate during a hurricane. We couldn’t fathom abandoning our pets!
Anyways, we have compiled an article to help pet owners devise a safety plan for their animals should a hurricane strike. We hope you find this article useful.

Tropical Storm Alex Gaining Strength
The latest news is that Tropical Storm Alex, the first Atlantic tropical storm of 2010, is quickly strengthening in power. The interesting thing is that we have been keeping a close eye on the development via the National Hurricane Center’s website since it was first spotted back at the tropical “something has been spotted” stage. Funnily enough, at that point, it had 0% chance of becoming a tropical depression. Then, it became a tropical depression! At that point. the National Hurricane Center posted that it had 10% chance of becoming anything more and sure enough, here we are with a tropical storm in full swing. We think the NHC has to work on their percentages. Obviously, 0% should have been more like 80% and 10% should be more like 90%.
Anyways, the storm is moving towards the Gulf of Mexico as we speak and further strengthening is expected due to warm Gulf waters and little wind. The rather large area from La Cruz, Mexico to Baffin Bay, Texas has been put on hurricane watch. Experts fear that Alex could become a hurricane by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning and make landfall around Thursday in either Mexico or Texas.
We will keep you posted.
